The Odessa High School Band of Distinction began their 2014 competitive season at the Kansas City Preview of Champions on September 20 at Blue Springs South High School.  The contest featured 12 bands from around the region in three different classes of competition in the preliminary round.  Then the bands performed in an open class contest in finals that evening.bdj-4616

In the preliminary contest, the Band of Distinction won the awards in their class for Outstanding Effect, Outstanding Music, and Outstanding Visual as well as winning first place in the class.  In Finals, the Band finished fifth overall despite the fact Odessa was the smallest school in the contest.  The guard finished second overall in Finals as well.

The Band’bdj-4607s “Delilah” program was well received by the judges as they appreciated the detailing of the visual look of the Band, including the props and color guard costuming.  The music and program are designed to portray the emotional and characteristic qualities of Delilah from story of Samson and Delilah in the Book of Judges.  The use of ropes and musical hints from the Bacchanale by Camille Saint-Saens helped bring the story to life and garnered many positive comments from the judges.

bdj-4619On September 27, the band competed at Ozark High School with 24 other bands.  After winning all the caption awards and first place in the preliminary contest against four other AA Class bands, the Band of Distinction went on to compete in the open class finals event as the only A or AA band to qualify.  In finals, the Band finished twelfth overall behind only AAA and AAAA bands.  The guard again finished second in Finals, only one point out of first place.

This week the Band of Distinction prepares for their third contest of the season at Blue Springs on Saturday.  The Blue Springs contest is the largest band contest in the Kansas City area with over 30 bands competing in a preliminary and finals competition.  The band performs at 10:15AM Saturday and the students and staff are hoping for a big cheering section in the stands.

The Band of Distinction is under the direction of Jeremy Meyer, with assistance from MJ Orf, Sonja Putnam (guard), Rachelle Pritchard (guard), Jill Endaya (percussion), Mariah Shields (guard), and Chris Putnam (visual design).  Additional information regarding the Band of Distinction can be found at their website: www.odessabands.com.  The band encourages you to show your support at any and all events as they continue their Pursuit of Excellence!
